Visit to Kumaranasan Memorial, Thonnakkal: Exploring Kerala’s Literary Heritage

On October 4th, 2024, as part of our community-based practical, we visited the Kumaranasan Memorial in Thonnakkal. We arrived at 9:30 AM and spent time exploring the memorial until 10:15 AM. Located in the birthplace of the renowned poet Kumaranasan, the memorial stands as a significant cultural and historical site in Kerala. The museum inside the memorial houses numerous artifacts related to the poet’s life, including his manuscripts, personal items, and rare photographs. The collection of letters and essays on display helped us understand the broad impact of Kumaranasan’s thoughts on literature and social reform.

A major highlight of the memorial is the bronze statue of Kumaranasan, which serves as a powerful symbol of his contributions to Malayalam literature and Kerala’s renaissance. Visiting this memorial was not just a journey into the life of one of Kerala’s greatest poets but an exploration of the essence of Malayalam literature itself. The peaceful surroundings and the wealth of knowledge in the museum made it a must-visit for anyone interested in literature, history, or Kerala’s cultural evolution.

Priyadarshini Planetarium, Thiruvananthapuram: A Cosmic Journey

Later on the same day, our next stop was the Priyadarshini Planetarium in Thiruvananthapuram. The planetarium offers an engaging show that takes visitors on a journey through stars, planets, and galaxies. Using a modern hybrid projection system, the planetarium provides an immersive and realistic experience. The large dome screen created a stunning view of the universe, allowing us to explore distant corners of space. The programs at the planetarium are designed to be both educational and entertaining, captivating the attention of both children and adults.

The planetarium is part of the Kerala State Science and Technology Museum, which houses a variety of scientific exhibits and interactive displays. These exhibits cover topics ranging from physics, chemistry, and biology to mathematics and electronics. The museum is designed to encourage curiosity and exploration, particularly among young minds. Our visit to the planetarium was an unforgettable experience, enriching our understanding of science and the universe.
