On 12/03/2025 our community outreach program took us to Ashraya, where we arrived at 9:30 AM and were warmly received by the staff and residents. The visit began with an inspiring speech by Kalayapuram Jose, who emphasized the significance of supporting the elderly and understanding their needs. Following this, we had a brief discussion with the administrative officer, who provided an overview of the facility’s operations and management.
Next, we met with the social worker, who shed light on the challenges faced by the residents and the efforts made by Ashraya to address them. Our mentor for the day, Remya Vimala, then guided us through the visit, ensuring we felt comfortable as we interacted with the residents.
We first visited the female ward, where we spent time conversing with the residents. They shared their life experiences with us, and it was evident how much they appreciated having someone to listen to them. From 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, we took part in a prayer session with the residents, which created a peaceful and uplifting atmosphere. After the prayer session, we had lunch, using the time to reflect on our experiences from the morning. In the afternoon, we visited the male ward, where we met and interacted with several residents, including Krishnan Kutty from Pattazhy, Thankappan, Gopalakrishnan, Rajan from Ganapathy Temple in Kottarakkara, Mohanakrishnan from Pujappura in Trivandrum, and Chandran. They openly shared their life stories, and we were deeply moved by their warmth and willingness to connect with us.
Our visit to Ashraya was both meaningful and eye-opening. It deepened our understanding of the emotional and social needs of the elderly, reinforcing the importance of compassion and support. The experience left a lasting impact on all of us.
