Community Service - Day 2

On March 13, 2025, we reached Ashraya at 10:00 AM for the second day of our visit, accompanied by our teachers, Ms. Vismaya Thomas and Ms. Sithusha. The day began with an orientation and reflection session led by Shanthakumar Sir, where we shared thoughts on the previous day's experiences and discussed areas for growth. He also introduced us to upcoming debate topics—mobile usage, all-pass in exams, and ragging—encouraging us to think critically and prepare thoughtfully.

At 10:30 AM, we were split into two groups and sent to interact with residents in the male and female wards. In the male ward, we met residents like Gopalakrishnan, Sukumaran, Krishna Kumar, and Satheeshkumar, who shared stories, sang songs with us, and even demonstrated yoga. Their warm responses made the interactions deeply meaningful. By 11:00 AM, we gathered in the general hall for a group activity session filled with games, singing, dancing, and exercises. The energy was high, and the residents’ joyful participation made it a lively and heartwarming experience.

The prayer session from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM brought a calm and spiritual atmosphere, during which I had the chance to join others in singing a prayer song. This was followed by a welcome speech from Mr. Varghese Kurien, who spoke about Ashraya’s mission. After lunch, we spent time in the female ward, connecting with residents like Shanthamma and Naseela, who openly shared their life stories. In the final part of the day, we helped clean and organize the library, followed by a reflection session guided by our teachers. This allowed us to process the emotional depth of the day and recognize the impact of our interactions.

Community Service Day 1

On 12/03/2025 our community outreach program took us to Ashraya, where we arrived at 9:30 AM and were warmly received by the staff and residents. The visit began with an inspiring speech by Kalayapuram Jose, who emphasized the significance of supporting the elderly and understanding their needs. Following this, we had a brief discussion with the administrative officer, who provided an overview of the facility’s operations and management.

Next, we met with the social worker, who shed light on the challenges faced by the residents and the efforts made by Ashraya to address them. Our mentor for the day, Remya Vimala, then guided us through the visit, ensuring we felt comfortable as we interacted with the residents.

We first visited the female ward, where we spent time conversing with the residents. They shared their life experiences with us, and it was evident how much they appreciated having someone to listen to them. From 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, we took part in a prayer session with the residents, which created a peaceful and uplifting atmosphere. After the prayer session, we had lunch, using the time to reflect on our experiences from the morning. In the afternoon, we visited the male ward, where we met and interacted with several residents, including Krishnan Kutty from Pattazhy, Thankappan, Gopalakrishnan, Rajan from Ganapathy Temple in Kottarakkara, Mohanakrishnan from Pujappura in Trivandrum, and Chandran. They openly shared their life stories, and we were deeply moved by their warmth and willingness to connect with us.

Our visit to Ashraya was both meaningful and eye-opening. It deepened our understanding of the emotional and social needs of the elderly, reinforcing the importance of compassion and support. The experience left a lasting impact on all of us.

WORKSHOP ON LIFE SKILL DEVELOPMENT

Enhancing Well-being Through Stress Management: A Workshop at BMM II Training College

A Stress Management Workshop was recently held at BMM II Training College with the objective of helping participants understand the nature of stress, its effects, and practical strategies to manage it. The session was conducted by Sreejith Nair, a Clinical Psychologist from IAFM, who offered valuable insights into stress and its relevance—especially in the teaching profession.

The workshop began with a scientific overview of stress, focusing on how it affects the human brain. Participants were introduced to key brain regions involved in stress regulation, such as the prefrontal cortex, limbic system, and brainstem. Mr. Nair clarified the distinction between the brain and the mind, enabling attendees to differentiate between the physiological and psychological dimensions of stress.

A major highlight of the session was the clear explanation of the differences between worry, anxiety, and stress. Attendees learned how each of these mental states uniquely influences emotional health and why understanding them is essential for effective stress management. Various forms of stress—including acute, chronic, and workplace stress—were examined, along with their underlying causes.

The workshop also addressed the adverse impacts of unmanaged stress on physical, emotional, and mental health. Chronic stress, if ignored, can lead to serious conditions like hypertension, anxiety disorders, and burnout. Participants were encouraged to identify early warning signs to mitigate these risks.

To promote healthy coping, the session introduced several practical stress management techniques. Participants engaged in mindfulness practices, deep breathing exercises, time management strategies, and relaxation methods. The hands-on, interactive format allowed for real-time application and understanding of these tools.

Visual aids, including a PowerPoint presentation, complemented the discussion and made complex concepts easier to grasp. Personal anecdotes shared by the resource person helped illustrate real-world relevance and fostered a more relatable learning experience.

The workshop proved to be an enriching and impactful experience, equipping attendees with a comprehensive understanding of stress and tools to handle it effectively. The interactive nature of the session ensured lasting engagement and practical takeaway.

Given the highly positive feedback from participants, it is strongly recommended that such workshops be conducted on a regular basis. Developing stress management skills is essential for maintaining mental health and resilience, especially for educators who navigate demanding roles. Periodic sessions can provide ongoing support and reinforce well-being for both faculty and students.

Stress Management Workshop

A Stress Management Workshop was conducted at BMM II Training College to help participants understand stress, its impact, and effective coping strategies. Led by Sreejith Nair, a Clinical Psychologist from IAFM, the session provided insights into the science behind stress, focusing on key brain structures like the prefrontal cortex, limbic system, and brainstem. The distinction between the brain and the mind was explained, along with the differences between worry, anxiety, and stress. Participants also learned about various types of stress, including acute, chronic, and workplace stress, and their effects on mental and emotional well-being.

The session emphasized the negative impact of chronic stress on physical and psychological health, highlighting risks like hypertension, anxiety disorders, and burnout. Educators, in particular, were advised on the importance of stress management due to their demanding workloads. Practical stress management techniques such as mindfulness, deep breathing, time management, and relaxation exercises were introduced and practiced during the session. The interactive nature of the workshop, supported by a PowerPoint presentation and real-life examples, made it engaging and informative for participants.

The workshop proved to be an insightful and valuable experience, equipping attendees with essential stress management skills. Participants remained actively engaged, ensuring they could apply the techniques in their personal and professional lives. Given the highly positive feedback, it is recommended that similar workshops be conducted regularly to reinforce these strategies and provide continuous support to educators and students alike.

Criticism day 3

On the third day of the Criticism Class at BMM College, I observed Sherin’s Mathematics class, which allowed me to analyze teaching methods, content delivery, and student engagement strategies. This experience highlighted the significance of clear explanations, effective teaching aids, and a well-structured lesson flow. Additionally, I gained insights into how students responded to different approaches, which will be valuable in shaping my own teaching practices.

Later, as a peer critic for Sheba’s class, I evaluated her lesson structure, concept clarity, and interaction with students. Providing constructive feedback required assessing her strengths while identifying areas for improvement. This process helped me develop a critical perspective on classroom management and instructional techniques. The peer criticism session fostered reflective thinking, enabling both of us to enhance our teaching skills through shared learning.

Overall, the experience reinforced the importance of observation and peer evaluation in professional growth. Analyzing different teaching styles provided a deeper understanding of effective classroom strategies. Being both an observer and a critic helped me refine my approach, better preparing me for the realities of teaching.
